Rogerson House Redevelopment Project Receives Full Zoning Approval

At the beginning of June, Rogerson Communities received full zoning approval from the City of Boston for our Rogerson House redevelopment project in Jamaica Plain. This approval, granted unanimously by Boston’s Zoning Board of Appeals, caps off a two-year entitlements process involving multiple public meetings, design reviews, and stakeholder discussions.  Originally opened in 1997 as the Boston Alzheimer’s Center, Rogerson House was the first assisted living community in Greater Boston to care exclusively for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Our flagship community will now be redeveloped to contemporary standards with a wide array of improvements.   The new Rogerson House will consist of 66 memory care residences, a doubling of the number of memory care units on site. Instead of companion suites with shared bathrooms—once the…

The Difference Between Housing and Home

Walk into Carol Ramdehal’s home at Longfellow House in Roslindale and you will see care everywhere you look: from the art on the walls to the flowers in pots to the throw, in a color that matches both, neatly draped on the arm of an overstuffed chair. You’re immediately comfortable, and it’s not by accident—what you’re feeling is the expression of Carol’s love and appreciation for her surroundings. Everything is in its place. Nothing about it looks taken for granted.  Ask her how she likes living at Longfellow, and she will make the point much more explicitly.  “This place is my home,” she says, emphasizing the word. “Every day I give…

Rogerson Mourns the Passing of Brit d’Arbeloff, Legendary Engineer and Organization’s Most Generous Supporter

Rogerson Communities today mourns the loss of a trusted leader, faithful supporter, and beloved friend, Brit d’Arbeloff. Brit, who served on Rogerson’s Board of Directors since 2004, including more than a decade as Chair, was one of the organization’s most influential strategic leaders. In the words of another past Board Chair, John Cupples, “she elevated the aspirations of the organization and encouraged us to think big.” That big thinking resulted in Rogerson growing from 11 communities in 2004 to 21 communities today, and from 750 to 1,500 homes. Brit helped guide this expansion beyond Greater Boston into southeastern Massachusetts and…

Rogerson’s Worcester Redevelopment Project Receives Over $1 Million in Federal Funding

Rogerson Communities announced yesterday a $1.2 million federal funding earmark for its redevelopment project in Worcester.  The project involves the historic restoration of the St. Vincent Hospital Convent and Nurses Home, attached to the Worcester Senior Center, and the construction of a new affordable independent living apartment building on the site. Altogether, the redevelopment project will bring 98 affordable homes to older adults of Worcester on a campus with support services and programs already in place.  “These projects are essential and important to the well-being of older adults,” shared Rogerson President and CEO Walter Ramos. “Rogerson is thankful for the opportunity to bring affordable homes to the older adults of Worcester.”  The federal funding…

Becoming the Grandmother She’d Always Hoped to Be

Judy Mongello wanted what many people want—to be near her loved ones as she aged. But with a son, her only child, living in one of the most expensive real estate markets in the country, that dream felt out of reach.   Judy had eased into a comfortable retirement in Dallas, Texas after a 42-year career that encompassed roles from flight attendant to administrative assistant to overseeing employee relations for a major hotel corporation. When her son and his wife welcomed twin boys into the world in 2012, however, she took on yet another role—grandmother.   She was overjoyed of course, flying up to Boston almost monthly to visit and help out with the new babies. Judy was a seasoned traveler, yet these trips started to…
