Rogerson Communities has received a $25,000 grant from The Boston Foundation to alleviate food insecurity among Boston’s older adults. The award, called Meeting the Moment: Sustaining Families, is a one-year grant in support of costs related to food distribution to underserved populations around the city. Access to nutrition is a key component of Rogerson’s mission to enhance the well-being of older adults. The organization plans to use the grant funds to help feed participants in its Adult Day Health (ADH) program, which incorporates a meals program. Last year, nearly one in three adults in Massachusetts experienced food insecurity in the prior…
Sheronda Davis is a curious, socially engaged, and independent person. Most of all, however, she is resilient. After a truly life-altering experience, she found her way to a welcoming and supportive home on Beacon Hill, at Peter Faneuil House. While she has lived most of her adult life in Greater Boston, Sheronda spent her late teens and young adulthood in New York City. Coming of age in New York during the 1970s and early 1980s was a memorable experience, she says, recalling how she “hit the club scene” at storied dance hotspots like the Paradise Garage and the Crisco Disco. She had settled down a bit by the time she visited a friend in Boston around Thanksgiving of 1986, and decided to apply for a job at Filene’s Basement. If she…
We hear the story far too often: an older adult experiences a health crisis that threatens her financial stability, and even her ability to remain housed. When it happened to Elizabeth, a resident of Beacon House who fell behind in rent due to a hospitalization, her property manager didn’t hound her—she helped her. Elizabeth built a career on helping others, founding, with her husband, an intermediate care facility for people struggling with mental health and substance abuse disorders. She followed that up by earning a master’s degree and working in a hospital psychiatric department. After the passing of her husband and parents, she spent time at a Buddhist meditation retreat…
Sometimes “Community Room” is simply a phrase on a door or wall in a residence for older adults. At Beacon House in Boston, however, the Community Room truly lived up to its name on a chilly December Wednesday, hosting a festive holiday gathering for more than 50 residents. The innate elegance of the room was augmented with lights, wreaths, and seasonal table décor, including lavender plants resembling miniature Christmas trees and tall tapers glowing with simulated yet cheery flames. Sandwiches, wraps, salads, snacks, and sweets were laid out on long tables along one wall, while dozens of residents found seats at the tables around the room, telling stories, cracking jokes, and enjoying the warmth of each other’s company. In keeping with the spirit of the…
