The Story of Benilda is one very touching story. Originally from Puerto Rico, Benilda, she did not come from much and she felt she had to do more for herself. She embarked on a new chapter in Boston in 1978. Her journey is a testament to resilience, community spirit, and the profound impact of a supportive home.
Benilda’s early life was marked by both joy and hardship. Born on October 15, 1956, she faced a profound loss just days after her birth when her mother passed away. Raised by her loving grandparents, Benilda learned the value of kindness and generosity from a young age. Growing up with seven brothers and four sisters, she witnessed the complexities of family life and the importance of unity and support.
Upon arriving in Boston, Benilda first found shelter through the Boston Housing Authority (BHA), where she stayed for a couple of years, before she found a new home at Rogerson, where she has resided for the past five years. For Benilda, Rogerson holds some of the best moments of her life. Her heart is deeply rooted in the home, where she dedicates herself to volunteering and supporting her fellow residents. Whether coordinating activities for seniors or lending a hand during food drives, Benilda’s commitment to service reflects her enduring spirit.
Her life has not been without its trials. In seven months, Benilda faced unimaginable grief with the loss of two sons—one to asthma and another to leukemia. The weight of these losses, compounded by the passing of her husband within two years, has been profound. Yet, Benilda remains a beacon of strength, finding solace in the supportive community around her and the presence of her daughter, a compassionate nurse who provides unwavering support in every way.
Despite the hardships, Benilda finds joy at Rogerson House. She takes immense pride in helping others, cooking for her neighbors or helping the management organize events that bring people together. Her passion for giving back and her gratitude for the safety and companionship she finds at Rogerson are evident in everything she does and everything Rogerson stands for.
Benilda’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference a supportive community can make. Her willingness to recommend Rogerson to others speaks volumes about the positive impact Rogerson has had on her life. It’s a place where she feels secure, loved, and valued.
