Rogerson Communities and Forward
Inc. celebrated the opening of Spencer
House with a special ribbon
cutting ceremony with Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino. The event
was held Friday, September 21, 2007 at Spencer House, 2053R Columbus
Avenue, Roxbury, Mass.
Spencer House, a newly-constructed building offering 46 units of affordable
elder housing, is part of a $27 million redevelopment project in Egleston
Square. The development of Spencer House is a joint effort by the City
of Boston, Forward Inc. and 25 School St., Inc., a non-profit affiliate
corporate of Rogerson Communities.
In addition to providing affordable housing, Spencer House will also
be the site of Rogerson Fitness FIRSTSM, a state-of-the-art strength
training program and an adult day health program which will serve approximately
50 neighborhood and resident elders daily.

The Greater
Boston Chinese Golden Age Center/On-Luck Housing Development Inc.'s project to construct a new, 8-story building in partnership
with Rogerson Communities, was recently featured in the Boston
Business Journal (opens in PDF).
Both the Charles H. Farnsworth Charitable Trust and the Grand Circle
Foundation have committed $1 million each toward construction of the
new building containing 74 apartments for elders. An adult day health
program providing critical health and social services will also be
housed on the first floor and a senior drop-in center will offer neighborhood
residents a welcoming and attractive activities space. The fundraising
campaign is ongoing.
This vital project will help address a growing need for affordable
housing in Chinatown. Many elders in the rapidly vanishing neighborhood
live in overcrowded, sub-standard housing and pay a large proportion
of their income for housing. The redevelopment of the Hong Lok House
site will not only address an acute need for appropriate, affordable
housing and services for elders who live in this community; it will
also preserve the neighborhood's cultural heritage for years to come.
